Alternatively, you can look at one of the selected books we have
listed below, or use this form to search the Amazon site:
"Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith" by Rob Bell.
Two quotes. "This book is for those who need a fresh take on Jesus and what it means for us to live the kind of life he teaches us to live."
"Central to the Christian experience is the art of questioning God.
Not belligerent, arrogant questions that have no respect for our Maker,
but naked, honest, vulnerable, raw questions arising out of the awe
that comes from engaging the living God."
"Stuart: a life backwards" by Alexander Masters.
This is quite brilliant. It is a very readable account of the life of a homeless person, and the author's frustrating but engaging relationship with him. It describes homelessness and many of the associated issues in a humane and enlightening way. If you want to understand what life is like for our clients, this is the book. It is both informative and entertaining - an astonishing achievement.
"The Lost Message of Jesus" by Steve Chalke and Alan Mann.
Read it for yourself - don't let the controversy over one paragraph put you off. You may never see Jesus the same way again.
"The Challenge of Jesus" by Tom Wright.
Tom Wright is just incredible. He writes groundbreaking theology, and also communicates brilliantly with the person on the street. This is more of a 'middle-ground' book - you have to work at bits, but the effort is really worth while. Several people we know have had their faith renewed and deepened through reading it.
"The Jesus I Never Knew" by Philip Yancey.
A very different book about Jesus, but also very helpful: a personal account of Philip Yancey's journey to discover Jesus after finding that the traditional view of Jesus he had been brought up with was no longer enough.
"Struggling with Forgiveness: Stories from People & Communities" by David Self.
David Self used to work in St Pauls, and is a deeply encouraging and inspirational person. We were delighted to discover that he has written this helpful and sensitive book.
