LITE Course

Introduction

LITE: Lifeskills Initial Training for Employment

The LITE Course is a part-time course specifically for people who have been long term unemployed. It aims to provide the essential initial step towards further education and/or employment by helping to build confidence and self worth as well as introducing life skills (such as handling emotions, responding to authority, handling responsibility, assertiveness) and job search skills.

Invitation

LITE may be able to help.

Designed for anyone who has been unemployed for a long time, LITE provides the opportunity for people to make a significant step towards securing a brighter future. Previous trainees have gone on to gain a variety of vocational and professional qualifications, while others have been able to hold down paid employment.

If you would like to build your confidence or improve your personal skills, then why not contact the LITE office?

The LITE course is part-time. The course is offered free of charge and no formal qualifications are needed.

More About LITE

What is LITE?

LITE was established in 1990 and exists today to promote positive choices for those facing multiple barriers to employment. LITE offers opportunities for unemployed adults to upgrade their skills through training designed to develop key personal lifeskills.

Who can Apply?

You are welcome to apply if you are 18 years or over. You don't need any formal qualifications.

How to Apply

You can apply by contacting the office (see below). We will arrange an informal interview and give you more information and an application form. We will give you help to complete the form if you need it. Once you have given us your application, we we can usually give you a response straight away.

Course Content and Structure

The course consists of four modules, each lasting four weeks. The final module includes 1 or 2 weeks on a job placement which we arrange for you, and sometimes a week when we go away together for outdoor activities.

For the rest of the course we expect you to be with us for two afternoons (currently Monday and Thursday) each week. We work with other city wide initiatives, and we offer training and awards in IT, literacy and numeracy skills.

Student Support

We have good experience of working with people who are homeless or in unstable / unsuitable housing and also people with mental health problems, and welcome such applications.

We will assess each trainee and identifiy strengths and needs so that everyone can get as much benefit as possible from the course.

Assessment and Award

You will receive a certificate for every module you successfully complete.

We don't ask you to sit exams, but we tell you how you are doing throughout the course and what you need to do to succeed.
