Jason's Story
Experiences I have had on the LITE Course
Because of my drug history, I'm unable to remember how I actually came in contact with doing the LITE Course, but I do remember doing the course. I'll start off by saying how helpful and kind everyone was to me and other students. I know that if it weren't for the people on the course I most probably would be wondering what to do with myself each day.
There was a good atmosphere and learning was fun. I experienced many things starting with confidence building which we started with a name game. In the name game, you would say your name and then throw the ball to another person in random order so as to get to know everyone's name with an element of fun, and to create a good atmosphere.
The next experience was quite interesting as we learnt how to use a computer and to use different programmes such as word processing, as well as using Microsoft Windows. There were games such as taboo (which I'm unable to remember) and other games like hang man helped us with our spelling. There was also pictionary and 3D connect 4 which made us use our brains and interact with other students.
I remember tutors on the course helping us to learn about food and hygiene and what nutrients there are in different foods so as to have a good diet. As I already know how to budget my money, I didn't really have to pay much attention to 'How to Budget Your Money'. They helped me to use the telephone, but I still get a bit nervous if I have to talk to someone I don't know.
There was also a week away where we all had to learn to get on with one other. I found that a little hard at times as, in my mind, I thought people were judging me. They soon helped me by praying for me.We participated in activities such as kayaking (which is similar to canoeing) which was a great laugh. We also climbed a structure known as Jacob's Ladder; we had a team of three members to help each other to climb to the top. That was very exhilarating. I think there were two or three teams, but our team was the one to make it to the top - which goes to show that if you put your mind to it and with the right people around, you can accomplish anything.
I could go on to say a lot more but I'm in the process of getting everything organised to get married to the woman of my dreams. I once prayed to God for the right woman and, thanks be to God, I'm with the woman of my dreams and am getting married on 18 June this year (2005).
To anyone thinking of doing this course, who may have been through many difficult obstacles and had a hard live, no matter what walk of life you have come from I personally highly recommend LITE as it's a start back into life. The whole team helped me so much that I have been in part-time work for the last two years. I know now that I have a purpose in life. I feel I should add that, on 24 July 2002, God came into my life and all sorts of things started happening. So, the conclusion is that I now follow Jesus Christ and my life is better than when I didn't believe. The help is there and these people are good at what they do and they do care.
I would like to thank the whole team for helping me so much, and to add that if you let them help I'm sure they'll be able to steer you in the right directions.
