Sleep Out 2019

What is the Sleep Out?

Sleep Out is an annual event where hundreds or people sleep outside for one night in central Bristol. It is by no means the total experience of homeless people but it helps to highlight the reality of increasing homelessness in our city.

The event is at Central Church (previously called Pip 'n' Jay Church) from 10pm on Friday 11th October, through until 7am on Saturday 12th October. You will need to bring a warm sleeping bag, lots of layers and we suggest that you bring a ground sheet, some cardboard and some waterproof sheeting, as we never know what the weather will be like on the night!

Why should you take part?

According to the annual rough sleeper count completed by Bristol City Council on one night in December 2018, between 2am - 5am, there were 82 rough sleepers in Bristol. As the City Cabinet Member for Housing, Paul Smith, points out,

“We are very aware that people sleeping rough only represent a very small portion of the wider homelessness issue in Bristol with hundreds of families in temporary accommodation and many other people forced to live in vehicles or in other unsuitable circumstances. We are working closely with partners to support rough sleepers and homeless people in a number of ways, but the problem remains that people are finding themselves on the streets quicker than we can support people into suitable accommodation."

2018/19 hasn't been an easy year for homeless people. The housing crisis has meant more and more people finding themselves without a home, while cuts and other issues with universal credit have meant that an increasing number of people have had to rely on foodbanks in order to feed themselves and their families.

Participating in Sleep Out 2019 is an opportunity for you to raise vital funds to support the work we do throughout the year to help and support thousands of homeless and vulnerable people across Bristol, as we offer food, shelter and hope.
Join one of our participants who says, "I see first hand the positive difference Crisis Centre Ministries makes to homeless and vulnerable people in Bristol. Without donations and dedicated volunteers CCM wouldn't be able to serve hot meals, provide a bed for women six nights a week, support clients in addiction recovery, provide food parcels, give a listening ear, prayer support and so much more!"
